8 GB Installed, Only 3.48 GB Usable

I have a Pavilion g4-1264ca running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64). I have a matched pair of  4GB sticks (8GB total RAM).  Both the BIOS and OS verify that 8GB are installed, yet I only have 3.48GB usable.

The sticks have been tried in both slots with the same results.

The BIOS has been updated from HP.  The BIOS does not have an option for memory remapping or memory extension. The update did not change anything.

I've tried checking and unchecking Maximum memory in Win 7 msconfig with no change.
Fan speed runs a bit high, otherwise it all seems to be functioning normally.
How do I get the usable RAM above 4GB?

questions bout updates

Hi, I have a question, I am getting annoyed over my Laptops constant updating. Every second day its telling me to that there are updates and to log in to get them updated, and each update takes at least an hour in a half to two hours, because I Have to click up date at least six times before its fully updated. this is annoying and I really dont see why it needs to update that often. I have never seen a PC update that much or for that long ever. This has just started happening the past two weeks, before that it would update once a week and take up to two hours with six restarts and that was way too much and too long I thought. HELP whats going on with this, and how can I stop it. its ridiculous.  Also....I do not like the they have removed the contact techinical online support chat option in the HP help.

Software for "Other Devices" in Device Manager in a fresh install

Having rebuilt the above laptop with new motherboard and hard drive, I loaded a fresh copy of Vista using an ISO installation disk and my COA. All seemed to go perfectly.

But, I cannot get connected to my router, either by LAN or wireless. The Realtek RTL 8101 E Network Adapter driver seems to be correctly installed, but the Network Controller and several "Other Devices" , for example: Base System Device, SM Bus Controller, etc. need drivers.

My dilemma is that I do not know what driver(s) to search for.

In addition, while searching HP's websites, I have not been able to locate the drivers offered for this Pavilion model. The websites just keep asking me to key in the model number, then display the picture of this model and again ask for the model number. Have the locations of the drivers changed on HP websites?

Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

My laptop battery doesn't hold a charge while the charger is plugged in. Also, the battery icon on the bottom right of the screen has a red x. When I hover over the icon, it says "No battery is detected".

I tried searching on the system's help features and Control Panel with no success. We use the AC adapter that was included with the computer.

New hard drive, recovery discs won't work! Help!!

Hi - the hard drive on my Pavilion 4070-us crashed, so I bought a replacement drive - a Samsung SSD 850 EVO, 256GB.  The problem is that I can't seem to get the recovery discs to work, and neither Microsoft or HP is willing to help me.  Microsoft of course tells me that they won't give me any help for OEM versions of Windows 7, and HP said that my product has been discontinued so they won't help me.  That's ridiculous - I own a legal copy of Windows 7 and I can't get any help from the company that sold me the computer?

What happens after I go through the installation process with the recovery discs is that instead of the Windows installation continuing like it's supposed to, I get "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key".  I'm desperate, I tried two different options - one was the minimal image recovery, the other one was a factory restore.  Nothing seems to work. What can I do?   By the way, the original hard drive is not *completely* dead - I can still access most of the data on it.

HP Support Assistant keeps showing same message

A while ago I made a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion laptop that was shipped with Windows 8, and I installed HP Support Assistant to get quickly all th drivers and to keep the pc updated.

But the Support Assistant keeps on showing me two messages i can't get rid of: one about "Before updating to Windows 8.1" and the other about "After updating to Windows 8.1". These messages are displayed to make the user check driver/hardware compatibility before updating the pc to Windows 8.1 but they are useless to me; i already made the check trying to get rid of them but they keep showing up with a red exclamation point in the Support Assistant icon.

I keep on delaying them since pressing the "X" doens't actually delete them, but they are pretty annoying.

How can i permanently delete those messages?

Windows 7 Professional isn't loading on my laptop

Hello, I have an HP Elitebook 8540w laptop with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on it. Few days ago I updated few programs which my laptop showed that they need to be updated. On the next day I started my laptop but it just didn’t want to load the Windows. I am not very competent when it comes to computers and operating systems, but I am very good in following instructions. So I will describe the problem and what I do, in details and with screenshots, and I hope some of you can help me.

Here’s what’s happening:

I press the power button, a screen with the HP logo appears and then a black screen with the usual message 'Starting Windows', but without Windows logo over it. Here’s a screenshot:

It stays like this for few minutes then Windows Error Recovery appears:

Then Startup Repair starts to load and try to repair the Windows, but it fails and shows this message:

If I click on 'View problem details' this is what it shows:

If I close this window and click on “View diagnostic and repair details” this is what it shows:

What I notice here is the line: 'Windows directory = D:\Windows', but my Windows is installed on local disk C. I don’t know if this is how it’s supposed to look like.

Then I close this diagnostic window and click on 'View advanced options for system recovery and support'

I chose a language and login to my user account with my password and it leads me to 'System Recovery Options'.

Here I notice again the line: 'Operating system: Windows 7 on (D:smileyhappy: Local Disk', but like I’ve said my Windows is on Local Disk C.

The first option - Startup Repair – obviously doesn’t work since I have already tried it, so I choose the second one – 'System Restore'. First it shows me a window box telling me what System Restore does, I click 'Next' and then it brings me to a window where I chose the restore point:

There is only one restore point. If I click on the 'Scan for affected programs' button it shows me these programs:

I remember that these were the programs that I updated the day before my windows crushed. And if I remember correctly, the message that I need to update these programs came from Avast antivirus. I don’t know why though…

Anyway, so I chose the restore point and click on 'Next' and then it brings this message:

I click on 'Finish' and a message saying 'Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue?' appears. I click on 'Yes' and System Restore starts.

It loads for a few minutes and then shows a message saying that it didn’t complete successfully:

When I run the command chkdsk /R in the Command Prompt window this is the message I get:

I also tried entering Windows in Safe Mode, but it also doesn’t load.

I don’t know what to do. I really need my laptop since I work with it. I work as a freelancer and I have very important information on my Local disk D. I am backing up my most important folder on an external hard drive but there has been some time since my last back up and a lot of files aren’t backed up.
