I have a Pavilion Notebook 17-e020us with Windows 8 64 bit. According to informaion on HP support they do not recommend updating to 8.1 for this Notebook. However, according to Kim Komando there is a risk in not updating.

During Patch Tuesday, Microsoft updated 8.1. If you’re set to automatic updates, you already have it, and you’re set. But if you’re doing manual updates and haven’t gotten to it yet, get to it now.
In an attempt to stop the fragmenting of Windows 8.1, Microsoft will stop allowing updates to computers that aren’t keeping up with them. So if you don’t make the current update with 30 days, you’ll stop getting updates altogether.
The last date? By May Patch Tuesday, which is May 13.
This is important, and you should get to it now, if you have 8.1. If you don’t, you leave your unpatched computer wide open to attacks.
Even if you’re updated, you can be vulnerable to attacks without security protection. Visit mySecurity Center and get your computer locked down today.

I wanted to send an email to Tech support since I am still covered for free support but couldn't find a way to send it.
What am I supposed to do about the 8.1?
