HP ProtectTools Security Manager

I have 2 brand-new HP Probook 4540s (8 GB RAM), Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition, SP1.

Both are patched to the latest Windows 7 updates (July 5, 2013).

Both came with HP ProtectTools, which includes, among other things, the Security Manager.

HP technical support has gone back and forth with me on un-installing and re-installing this product, along with 2 other HP products:  HP Support Assistant, and HP Software Framework.  The trigger to all this is that when I first got the laptops, and ran HP ProtectTools the first few times, I always got the error message "HPSF has stopped working, Windows is looking for a solution to the problem." UPON EXITING ProtectTools.

I have since re-installed HP Security Manager Ver. 7.0.1.1199 (1 June 2012) - sp57486, instead of the latest version which is Ver 8.1.0.1451 (16 Apr 2013) - sp61498 BECAUSE in installing the latter (Ver 8.1.0.1451), I would get the scary message that Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributable must either be repaired to its original state, or removed.

HP tech support can't seem to give me a straight answer on which version of Security Manager to install:  ver 7 or ver 8?

Would appreciate anyone who has experienced this to share some thoughts.
