Will enabling VT in the BIOS enable me to run VMs in 64 vice 32 bit mode?

I have a number of virtual machines running on my Pavilion dv7 notebook with OEM installed Windows 7 Home Premium.  I am using the free VM Player.  Supposedly my OS is operating 64 bit vice 32 bit, but I think not.  When I loaded Windows 8 and Ubuntu linux on VMs I could not tun them in 64 bit mode.  Is it because in the BIOS setup I see the VT is disabled?  If I go into the BIOS and enable the VT mode and disregard the HP recommendation will that solve the problem of my VMs being able to run Windows 8 and Ubuntu in 64 bit mode?  Or is there something else going on?  I bought my Pavilion dv7 in the states in May 2012, but I'm now physically in South Korea.  It shouldn't make a difference but does HP disable selected features of the BIOS on US sold systems?
