HP elitebook spare key

I went to install the spare key security feature in case of a hard drive or other failure on my HP Elitebook 8540p, I selected the option for both the questions and the USB spare key.  I then inserted a thumb drive as instructed when prompted, but as near as I can figure, it appears that instead of making the thumb drive the spare key, it wiped out the SSD hard drive, where Windows 7 is installed instead.  Is there anyway to undo this without going through reinstalling the operating system, all of the drivers, updates and other stuff on that drive and of course losing what files that I had stored there?  I wish that it had allowed for selection of the drive to be used for the spare key instead of assuming that the SSD hard drive was where it should put it.  It appears an error that took a second or two make may have destroyed my files and operating system on the ssd drive and now I can not get to my work files which likely survived on the second hard drive as well on the laptop until I fix this. Unless someone knows of a way to undo this, at the least, hours of labor will be required to undo this error and I still may have lost what other files I had stored on that SSD drive.
